Florida District Chief Retires

John Vecchioli, Florida District Chief, retired from the U.S. Geological Survey on April 19, after nearly 42 years of service with the Water Resources Division. John joined the Survey in 1957 as a Hydrologist in Trenton, New Jersey, John later transferred to Long Island, New York, to become the Assistant Subdistrict Chief. He accepted the position of District Ground-Water Specialist for Florida and then became District Chief in 1992. During his career, John conducted research in subsurface waste injection, ground-water quality protection, and ground-water recharge. Much of his scientific work has received national and international recognition. He is not only respected by his colleagues for his contributions to the field of ground water, but also for his excellent leadership capabilities. John received the Department of Interior's Meritorious Service Award in 1988 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1996.

The search is currently underway for a new Florida District Chief.
